ASHLEY BOSWELL

I was born with a love of art and horses. My passion for the creative arts was fostered early on by my elementary art and drama teachers, my baton and dance coaches, and my own desire to express myself through art. Whether I was acting in a play, painting the scenery, dancing, or twirling, I always strived to paint a picture of hope and inspiration for my audience. I was always surrounded by animals, both real and imaginary. My room was filled with stuffed animals, and I often used them as characters in my plays and poems. I was also fascinated by the sea animals at Sea World, and I was thrilled to get a behind-the-scenes tour of the sea lion care facility when I was eight.  This sparked a great desire to connect and better understand animals. I didn’t know it then, but one day my two loves would collide.

After completing graduate school with a master's in Christian counseling, I served as a counselor in a variety of settings, including schools, group homes, churches, and private practice. I even began to pursue pet-assisted therapy with my Newfoundland dog. While I was fulfilled in my calling, I also missed painting and creating. In 1999, I decided to pursue my passion for art professionally and began a second career as a muralist and faux finishes artist in Charleston, SC. My favorite murals often featured animals, some even drawn and painted to scale. Can you imagine having a life-size horse peeking out of a barn stall in your room as a child?

Then in 2004, my love for animals and helping people heal culminated in the founding of Shepherd Youth Ranch, a nonprofit ministry that provides equine-assisted therapy to youth and families who have experienced trauma. Many of the horses at Shepherd Youth Ranch have been rescued from abuse and neglect, and I’ve had the honor to rehabilitate them using my skills as a horse trainer and animal behaviorist. I am always looking for ways to improve the lives of horses and humans, and I found that art can be a powerful tool for healing as well. This is how I came up with the idea to teach horses to paint!

Today, I reside in my hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina, along with my husband and rescue Chow Chow. I continue to dedicate myself to growing our nonprofit and my painting career. Our nonprofit serves over 1,000 people a year, including children, veterans, and survivors of abuse. We are grateful for our dedicated champions, herd of 18 horses, and mini mule, Ferris Mueller.

I have honed my skills in pet portraiture and landscape painting in oil and acrylic. I love the challenge of capturing the likeness of a pet or the beauty of a landscape. I am particularly inspired by Malachi, a rescued horse with an amazing story of hope and healing. I enjoy creating one-of-a-kind paintings with Malachi that reflect his unique spirit.

MALACHI

THE HORSE

From Rejected Colt To Artistic Hero

Born under a fence, accidentally separated from his mother, Malachi faced a rocky start.

Reunited, tragedy struck as his own mother ostracized him. Hand-raised and isolated, he lacked crucial herd skills. Misinterpreting his playful nips as aggression, his owner punished him, fueling a cycle of confusion and "misused dominance."

Ashley, on a mission to find the perfect partner for her Equine Assisted Therapy Ministry, providentially discovered Malachi. Though Malachi wouldn't initially fit the therapy program, she saw a spark – a resilience mirroring the struggles faced by those she aimed to help.

Years of patient rehabilitation followed. His "mouthy behavior" could remain a challenge, or… be transformed.

With a stroke of genius, Ashley introduced him to the world of painting. Brushes became an outlet, channeling his energy into vibrant creations. Malachi, the misunderstood colt, blossomed into a beacon of hope, his story and art touching countless lives.

He wasn't just overcoming, he was thriving, proving that even the most challenging starts can lead to the most beautiful triumphs.
